1.31.2007 My post office just put up these signs about how important it is to sign your credit card. It is yet another thing that bugs me about credit cards at point of sale... read it and see if you can figure out what the problem is. ![]() Think about what this is saying! If my card is not signed, the merchant must check my ID. If the card is signed, he needs no other ID than to check the signature on the slip to make sure it matches the card. Which of these authentication systems is more secure? The problem with putting your signature on the card is that it gives a credit card thief ample time to learn how to copy it. I don't know about you, but forging a signature (especially the barely legible ones on the back of a credit card) are not exactly difficult. Why give the thief something to practice on? Naturally, having an unsigned credit card lets him put his own version of your signature on the card, so that's really no better than signing it, I understand that. But really, isn't it time to come up with something better to prove a credit card holder is who he claims to be? Many banks put photos on the cards. Sounds perfectly reasonable. Or, sure, ask for ID every time. But trying to claim that "matching signatures" equals security... sheesh, I know nonsense when I see it. Robert Scoble is complaining that no one (or rather, not enough people) linked to his videos of a tour of Intel's latest chip manufacturing fabs. I won't get into the argument, really, except to say that I wouldn't watch yet another video from an Intel factory tour if you paid me to. OK, well, maybe if you paid me to. Unfortunately I'll never know if I passed at all: Not only do they not tell you whether you got the 35 out of 50 needed to move on, but not everyone who passed will get called. (You only get the nod if you live in an audition city that they select later.) Arghhhh. posted by Christopher Null | 8:25 PM Tonight is the night when hopes and dreams are thoroughly dashed. I've tried out for Jeopardy! twice before, and both times I narrowly missed the 35-questions-out-of-50 cutoff to advance to the second level tryout. (I think, anyway... They don't tell you your score in the end.) This year, I've sworn off studying, smart drugs, and anything that might actually help me do well on the test (which I'm taking online for the first time). Will it work? Probably not, but I'm a lot less nervous this time out. If you want to tryout, you can register until 7PM PST. (Officially this is just for west coast residents, but really anyone can take the test no matter where they live.) Test is at 8PM. In 2004 I bought something on eBay for $50, the person never sent it, and they vanished off the planet. I filed a dispute on Paypal, and after a few months just got back half the cash. I've long since written off the $25 (as had Paypal, which closed the case), but every time I login to Paypal, I get a "Your account has open issues!" message, in blue type inside a pink box. Two years of that starts to get old. I sent a message to support asking if they could just wipe that message off my account (never mind the $25), and was told to call Paypal customer service. Call? On the phone? I did. After 10 minutes on hold, I spoke to a very cordial rep. He took a look at the account and said not only was he going to get rid of that annoying message, he was going to refund me the $25! Now that was all a few minutes ago, so I don't have the cash and the message is still lingering, but I'm promised it'll all be done by the end of the week. Assuming this all pans out properly, kudos Paypal, you're my hero of the week! posted by Christopher Null | 10:43 AM 1.01.2007 ![]() (From Penny Arcade.) Not likely to get any better in 2007. Yay.
