TV resolution: Even Sony confesses it has no idea what the problem is, and suspects the interference from the tower up the hill is the culprit. So, I strapped on my hernia belt and solicited my father-in-law to help drag the 250 pound monster down the stairs and bring the old 140 pound monster back up the stairs. Problem solved: The extra shielding on the bottom story means there's no static down there. The old TV never had that problem in the first place. Plus, now I get HD-quality video downstairs since there's no Tivo or receiver in the way (thus I can use component video direct to the TV). So it actually works out better than before.

Jeopardy tryout results, for interested parties: I failed the test (of course), along with 93 other people out of the 100 in my testing group. To give you in idea of how fanatical the competition was, one of the women there was on her honeymoon. Her husband waited in the hallway. She failed too.

Tired of Comcast's perpetual outages and $93 monthly bill, I have finally dumped cable and gone to satellite. I did the research between DISH and DirecTV and didn't really see much of a difference, but DirecTV was about $3 cheaper, and I don't know anyone with DISH, so I went with DirecTV.

Problem #1 was trying to sign up on DTV's website. After getting through the entire selection process, the thing bombed out on me and said to call an 800 number. Ok, called the 800 number and problem #2 began: Customer service rep could not spell "NULL" for the life of her. It goes like this:

Me: "N-U-L-L"
Her: "N-O-L-L?"
Me: "N-U-L-L"
Her: "N-E-U-L-L?"
Me: "No, it's N-U-L-L"

She never successfully spelled it back to me, so I don't know if she ever got it right. Problem #3 came when she checked my credit. I have impeccable credit and have never even carried a balance on a credit card -- ever -- so it came to some surprise when she said I would need to pay a $150 deposit for equipment and she would take $10 off my bill for the next 15 months to pay it back. Uh, no. After getting confirmation that there was an option for "good credit" people to not pay any deposit, I told her I wasn't going to pay the deposit and that she should check again. She said that was that and, figuring that this company failed me three times in the last 10 minutes, it probably wasn't going to be worth my while in the long haul. She couldn't have cared less when I told her to cancel the whole thing.

I went to the DISH website, configured everything online in about 5 minutes, didn't have to suffer through five minutes of "specials" I was being offered, and even scheduled the installation online -- for next weekend, so I don't even have to skip work.

Assuming the install guys come and the thing actually works, I'll be mightily pleased.

PS Comcast sucks.

Today has been one of the hardest days of my life... I had to make the decision this morning to put my cat to sleep, and they gave her the injection this afternoon. Two glasses of scotch are helping to ease things...

About two months ago, she was diagnosed with lymphoma, and started chemotherapy -- I didn't even know that existed for cats! -- but after about week 10, she got a new drug and she reacted badly, refusing to eat anything and worse (you don't wanna know). After a stint in the cat hospital -- my Visa card is still in shock -- she came home with a Schaivo-style feeding tube up her little nose. Feeding a cat with a syringe stuck up her nose is not all that easy, but I did it for a few days and she still wouldn't eat. I found her this morning sprawled in her litter box, covered with the stuff. It was the hardest thing I've ever had to do...

She was a great pet for 14 years, a good friend and a companion who was always with me. Very fussy and prissy and always getting into things she shouldn't have, but a real warm heart that always wanted to be in your lap and didn't tolerate strangers in her lair. She is already greatly missed. The house isn't the same without her.

In happier days...

(she's the one on the bottom!)
